Common thread

What does a user interface designers and illustrators have in common? Let me tell you a story.

For those of you that are not familiar with the world of art and illustration, illustrators go to school to learn how to make a visual image that makes the viewer follow a narrative, follow a story. Well how does that work with the user interface designer?

Before I address that, I want to quickly give a brief description of what a user interface designer is. Every single digital screen that you encounter is a picture, an interactive one. A user interface designer crafts your experience navigating through these interactive pictures. On these pictures there are set shapes and colors that you interact with. This allow you to move through information and through processes to do what you want within those digital places.

Essentially it's a story.

Both illustrators and user interface designers try to guide the viewer through a visual experience in order to tell a story. Illustrators do this through singular or sequential image of people, places and things. User interface designers helps tell the story of an application, product or business through the interaction of apps, websites or digital screens associated with them.

The idea of story is paramount in both.
